VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR FORMER FIRE CHIEF HERBERT TANNER OF HEMINGWAY FOR HIS SEVENTY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE HEMINGWAY FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND TO RECOGNIZE HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF THE NAMING OF THE HEMINGWAY FIRE STATION IN HIS HONOR.
Whereas, Herbert Tanner of Hemingway enjoys fighting fires, not for the pleasure of fighting them, but for the satisfaction of knowing he is helping someone in trouble. For this cause, he has given the last seventy years of his life to firefighting with the Hemingway Fire Department; and
Whereas, on October 8, 2009, Mr. Tanner was honored by the Town of Hemingway for his long years of distinguished service as a member of the community and the Hemingway Fire Department; and
Whereas, as part of the celebration, Mayor Grady Richardson issued a proclamation declaring "Herbert Tanner Day" and naming the town fire station in Mr. Tanner's honor, a plaque to be erected to designate the building; and
Whereas, at a surprise celebration during which he was affectionately well "roasted," the men of the Hemingway Fire Department presented him with a plaque for his years of service; and
Whereas, the Hemingway Fire Department was started in 1936, and Mr. Tanner became a member in 1939 when there was no modern equipment, just a siren to alert firemen of an emergency and an old Merita bread truck they used to haul the hose and nozzle; and
Whereas, nowadays, the department has fifteen firemen and two pumps, and according to his colleagues, Herbert Tanner is usually the first one at the station when the alarm sounds, no matter what time of night it may be. His current job is to operate the pump, in addition to ordering all supplies, but he also can tear a fire truck down and put it together again if necessary; and
Whereas, fire chief for more than twenty-five years, Mr. Tanner resigned as head of the department when he was forced to spend a good deal of time out of town because of a family situation, but he has never ceased firefighting; and
Whereas, as a citizen, a family man, and member of the Hemingway Fire Department, Herbert Tanner has made service to others his constant pursuit, and in this pursuit he has performed with distinction and well deserves commendation. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor former Fire Chief Herbert Tanner of Hemingway for his seventy years of distinguished service to the Hemingway Fire Department, and recognize him upon the occasion of the naming of the Hemingway Fire Station in his honor.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Herbert Tanner.
