A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR PATRICK GRESSETTE PARKER II OF JASPER COUNTY FOR HIS ACADEMIC, EXTRACURRICULAR, AND COMMUNITY SUCCESSES, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR CAPTURING FIRST PLACE IN THE 2010 SENATOR FOR A DAY SPEECH CONTEST.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate take great pleasure in commending the achievements of Patrick Gressette Parker II of Jasper County and the high standard of leadership he has set among his peers; and

Whereas, as a student at Thomas Heyward Academy, Patrick Gressette Parker II has excelled consistently and received a myriad of academic and leadership honors; and

Whereas, the former president of his junior class and current president of his school's student government, he has set for himself a benchmark for learning that has earned him membership in Beta Club and resulted in his being named a Duke Scholar; and

Whereas, he has also been offered an academic scholarship to Lander University, as well as an academic and leadership scholarship to the University of Alabama, and he is the recipient of a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Regional Environmental Science Scholarship to Lander University; and

Whereas, this fine young man, having wide interests, has served his school as B Team football captain and junior-varsity football captain and has played junior-varsity and varsity basketball; and

Whereas, believing in active involvement with his community, Patrick gives generously of his time and talent to various local organizations. He is a volunteer with the Boys & Girls Clubs and Outdoors Without Limits, an ambassador for the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce and Jasper County Gopher Hill Festival, a missionary to Louisiana for the Ridgeland Baptist Church, and a participant in the church's youth ministry; and

Whereas, Patrick has grown up involved in local, county, and state government, having experienced numerous activities from attending Ridgeland Town Council meetings with his mother, who was a council member, to visiting the State House with the Gressette family; and

Whereas, those who heard his speech at the annual Senator for a Day contest recognized his articulate zeal and eloquence in public-policy issues as he spoke of retail tax incentives; and

Whereas, in keeping with his determined character, Patrick Gressette Parker II's long-term goals include attending Lander University this fall and majoring in criminal justice. Feeling he has much to offer the people of the Palmetto State in the fields of law enforcement and community leadership, he hopes that one day his portrait will hang beside that of his Great-Great-Uncle Marion Gressette in the chamber of the South Carolina Senate. Winning the Senator for a Day speech contest is one step in fulfilling that ambition; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to recognize such an exceptional son of South Carolina as Patrick Gressette Parker II, and the members honor and encourage his exemplary leadership and the keen insight he has shown regarding public policy. The members also extend best wishes to Patrick and look with interest toward his continued great achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Patrick Gressette Parker II of Jasper County for his academic, extracurricular, and community successes, and congratulate him for capturing first place in the 2010 Senator for a Day speech contest.
