A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING LILLIAN "BUNNY" WOODS JONES ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT FROM THE STAFF OF THE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE AND SENATE COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY, THANKING HER FOR HER DEDICATION TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND WISHING HER WELL IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Lillian "Bunny" Woods Jones is the daughter of the late Jackson W. Woods, a principal of Camp Liberty High School in Jenkinsville, South Carolina, and the late Lillian Means Woods, a retired nurse, and is the sister of the late Jackson W. Woods II; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones received her education at Roosevelt Village Elementary School (now E. E. Taylor Elementary School), W. A. Perry Middle School, and Booker T. Washington High School, and was the first African-American student to attend Columbia College, where she was a member of the Columbia College Choir; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones has had a distinguished career of public service working at Mosob Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center, a satellite office of the Lexington-Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center; the Richland County Family Court Volunteer Office; and the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Drug Abuse; and

Whereas, she has served as Deputy Director at the Department of Health and Human Services, and has been the Senior Policy Advisor to the President Pro Tempore of the South Carolina Senate and a coordinator of constituent services for the Senate Committee on Judiciary; and

Whereas, she has been married for forty-two years to Frederick C. Jones, Sr., and together they have participated in Bunny, Fred, and Friends Band for thirty-four years; and

Whereas, Fred and Bunny were honored as being Music Legends in the State of South Carolina by the Auntie Karen Foundation in February 2008; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones has a son, Frederick C. Jones, Jr., who works for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health; a daughter-in-law, Kimberley Whitaker Jones, who works for the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation; two grandchildren, Frederick C. Jones III, known as "Trey", who is in the sixth grade at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, and Arrington Renee Jones, who is in the first grade at A. C. Moore Elementary School; a nephew, Jackson W. Woods III; and two great nephews Izaiah Woods and Devin Woods; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones' has been a diligent and compassionate caretaker for Leola Caison, her husband's aunt, and Ethelyn Nance, her godmother; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones is a member of St. John Baptist Church in Hopkins, South Carolina, and the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones is a very active participant in Girlfriends, Inc., and the Columbia Chapter of MOLES; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones' dedication to her work has made her an invaluable resource to the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, the members of the Senate, and the Senate staff for the past seven years; and

Whereas, encouraged by a family that valued education and health care, Mrs. Jones has succeeded as an accomplished and dedicated advocate for quality of life issues, showing particular compassion and empathy for the elderly, sick, and disabled; and

Whereas, in all her public service, Mrs. Jones' efforts not only have brought reason and insight to structuring governmental processes and achieving important goals, but also have assisted and uplifted individuals who turned to their government as a last resort and found an understanding presence to hear their concerns; and

Whereas, because of her unique experience and knowledge in the healthcare area, her efforts have literally saved lives; provided quality of life for families and individuals who have suffered tremendous illnesses, physical challenges, and hardships; and brought hope to many individuals who were without hope; and

Whereas, in her private pursuits, Mrs. Jones continues to bring joy and kindness to so many who appreciate her music, companionship, and humanity; and

Whereas, her genuine desire to resolve difficult situations and her devotion to truly serving the public shall be greatly missed by the President Pro Tempore, the Senate, and its staff; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jones' decision to retire from her current position will leave her time to travel, play cards, enjoy being with her girlfriends and husband, and delight in caring for her grandchildren; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the South Carolina Senate to recognize Mrs. Jones' achievements on the occasion of her retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Lillian "Bunny" Woods Jones on the occasion of her retirement from the staff of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the Senate Committee on Judiciary, thank her for her dedication to the people of this State, and wish her well in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mrs. Lillian "Bunny" Woods Jones.
