A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. ELEANOR JANE HAIGLER PATE ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to learn that Mrs. Eleanor Jane Haigler Pate will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on June 5, 2010; and

Whereas, Mrs. Pate was born on June 5, 1910, in Union County, North Carolina, the fourth daughter of the late James Franklin and Pearl Pressley Haigler; and

Whereas, Mrs. Pate is a graduate of high school in Rockingham, North Carolina, and a 1931 graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where she served as special assistant to the president of the college; and

Whereas, after college graduation, Mrs. Pate moved to Camden, South Carolina, where she met and married the late Henry Clyde Pate, Senior, a Lee County resident; and

Whereas, the December 9, 1932, marriage of Eleanor Haigler to Clyde Pate was held on the stage of a Broad Street movie theater in Camden as a promotional event to stimulate business during the depression; and

Whereas, as Eleanor and Clyde exchanged vows before a packed house prior to the Saturday night feature, the event's promoter reportedly left town with the money Camden merchants raised for a Florida honeymoon and household items to be given to the couple; and

Whereas, Eleanor and Clyde did receive a frying pan and rocking chair as wedding gifts and honeymooned in Myrtle Beach thanks to Clyde's older brother loaning them his car; and

Whereas, the Pates lived briefly in Anderson, South Carolina, but spent most of their lives in Cheraw where they had four sons, Clyde, Junior, Mallory, Jerry D., and Van, and where Mrs. Pate managed a women's clothing store, the Fashion Post; and

Whereas, Mrs. Pate has seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. and Mrs. Pate were active in the First United Methodist Church of Cheraw for nearly sixty years, and Mrs. Pate was a member of the Eastern Star for over fifty years and served several terms as Worthy Matron while her husband served as Worshipful Master; and

Whereas, Mrs. Pate remained active in her church until 2003 when she moved to The Oaks, a retirement home of the United Methodist Church located just outside Orangeburg, South Carolina, where she resides today; and

Whereas, the Senate is pleased to honor Mrs. Pate and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Eleanor Jane Haigler Pate on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Eleanor Jane Haigler Pate.
