VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND THANK MRS. MATTIE JEANNINE O'QUINN CANNINGTON FOR HER DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF VARNVILLE AND FOR HER OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS TO VARNVILLE AND HAMPTON COUNTY THROUGH THE YEARS ON THE HAMPTON COUNTY COUNCIL AND IN OTHER CAPACITIES.
Whereas, Mrs. Mattie Jeannine O'Quinn Cannington was elected Mayor of Varnville in 2004 and became the first lady mayor of the Town of Varnville. Before being elected mayor, she previously served on the Hampton County Council; and
Whereas, as a public official, she worked tirelessly for Varnville and Hampton County and her career was marked by achievement and integrity; and
Whereas, Jeannine Cannington graduated from Varnville High School in 1946 and in 1949, she graduated from Baptist Hospital Nursing School in Columbia as a registered nurse. She spent her career as registered nurse until her retirement from the Hampton County Health Department; and
Whereas, in addition to her service as a public official she has been deeply involved in her community all of her adult life. She began her community service at the early age of thirteen by folding bandages for the wounded in World War II; and
Whereas, Mrs. Cannington went to McClellanville in 1989 after Hurricane Hugo and volunteered to do whatever tasks were needed to aid the victims of this terrible disaster. She is actively involved in Relay For Life as she and her daughter, Lynn, are breast cancer survivors. She also has worked many hours at the concession stand at Wade Hampton High School athletic events; and
Whereas, Jeannine Cannington married William R. Cannington on December 19, 1965, and they are blessed with a large and wonderful family consisting of three daughters, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; and
Whereas, seldom has a person done as much for her community as has this wonderful and talented lady, and the members of the House of Representatives would like to recognize and thank her for a lifetime of service to her fellow citizens and friends. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and thank Mrs. Mattie Jeannine O'Quinn Cannington for her distinguished service as mayor of the Town of Varnville and for her other contributions to Varnville and Hampton County through the years on the Hampton County Council and in other capacities.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Mattie Jeannine O'Quinn Cannington.
