A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. MARY E. CHEESEBORO, ADMINISTRATOR AND PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AFTER APPROXIMATELY THIRTY-FIVE YEARS IN EDUCATION AND TO WISH HER SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take great pleasure in recognizing the dedicated work of South Carolina educators such as Dr. Mary E. Cheeseboro and the commitment and enthusiasm she brings to South Carolina State University and its students; and

Whereas, Dr. Cheeseboro sought a foundation for her career in teaching first by earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Talladega College in 1973. One year later, she made history by becoming the first African American to earn a Master of Arts in the Teaching of English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois; and

Whereas, after earning her master's degree, Dr. Cheeseboro embarked on a career in higher education at Voorhees College. During her decade of service at Voorhees, she attained tenure as an associate professor of English, held the administrative positions of Director of Developmental Studies and Chair of the Division of Education and Humanities, and in 1982 earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Secondary Education with a cognate in English from the University of South Carolina with the assistance of Voorhees and the United Negro College Fund; and

Whereas, following her distinguished service at Voorhees, Dr. Cheeseboro began a career teaching in public institutions of higher education in South Carolina, including nearly two-and-a-half years as an adjunct professor and teaching associate at Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina, and twenty-six years at South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, during Dr. Cheeseboro's decades at South Carolina State University, she taught for seven years, earned tenure, attained the full rank of professor, and spent the last nineteen years serving in a variety of administrative capacities, including Director of the Education Improvement Act Minority Teacher Recruitment Program, Director of the African-American Teacher Loan Program, and Associate Vice President for Faculty and Programs; and

Whereas, in addition to her hard work at South Carolina State University, Dr. Cheeseboro has also distinguished herself professionally in numerous professional organizations, including the National Council of Teachers of English, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the Black Caucus of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the National Alliance of Black School Educators, and Phi Delta Kappa; and

Whereas, Dr. Cheeseboro has maintained a rich personal life, serving as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and enjoys reading, writing poetry, community service activities, and local festivals; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are grateful for the leadership that Dr. Mary E. Cheeseboro has brought to South Carolina State University and for her role as an educator in the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Mary E. Cheeseboro, administrator and Professor of English at South Carolina State University, upon the occasion of her retirement after approximately thirty-five years in higher education and wish her success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Mary E. Cheeseboro.
