TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE BETH DANIEL FOR HER EXCEPTIONAL CAREER IN PROFESSIONAL GOLF, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON THE OCCASION OF LEADING THE 2009 UNITED STATES SOLHEIM CUP TEAM TO VICTORY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that World Golf Hall of Famer Beth Daniel captained the American squad in the 2009 United States Solheim Cup and led the golfers in triumph; and

Whereas, born in Charleston on October 14, 1956, she began playing golf at an early age and fondly remembers being six years old and playing about a half hole behind her parents trying all the while to catch up to them; and

Whereas, her love of golf took hold the very first time she played, and her passion and commitment to the game has served her well throughout her long and illustrious career; and

Whereas, a graduate of Furman University with an education degree, she played on the 1976 national championship team that included several future Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) players; and

Whereas, Beth Daniel won the United States Women's Amateur in 1975 at her first appearance in the event, which made waves in the world of golf, and she repeated her triumph two years later at the 1977 event; and

Whereas, in 1979, she joined the LPGA and was named Rookie of the Year, and when her four wins in her second season earned her the Rolex Player of the Year, she became one of only three players to receive those two awards consecutively; and

Whereas, by 1985, nine more wins ranked her as the tour's eighth player to earn a million dollars, and in 1989, she became the second golfer in LPGA Tour history with a scoring average below 71.00; and

Whereas, in 1990, she dominated the LPGA by capturing seven titles that season, setting a single-season earnings record, garnering the Rolex Player of the Year award for the second time, and being named the United Press International Female Athlete of the Year; and

Whereas, she was named the LPGA Player of the Year a third time in 1994 and was inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in 1995, and in 1996, she became the third player in LPGA history to cross the five million dollar mark in career earnings; and

Whereas, in the year 2000, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, and in 2003, she became the oldest player to win on the LPGA tour when she took the Canadian Women's Open; and

Whereas, out of the eight Solheim Cup teams on which she has played, she helped three of those teams to take home the trophy, and in 2009 she captained United States Solheim squad and led the players to victory; and

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly gratefully acknowledges the distinction she has earned in professional golf and appreciates the pride and recognition she has brought to our beloved State and this nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and recognize Beth Daniel for her exceptional career in professional golf, and congratulate her upon the occasion of leading the 2009 United States Solheim Cup team to victory.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Beth Daniel.
