A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR COACH R. SHELL DULA, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR RECEIVING THE 2010 LONG CANE DISTRICT OF THE BLUE RIDGE COUNCIL OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARD FOR HIS DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE YOUTH OF GREENWOOD COUNTY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that the Long Cane District of the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America has named Coach Shell Dula the 2010 recipient of the Long Cane Distinguished Citizen Award; and

Whereas, after graduating from Laurens High School, Shell Dula attended Presbyterian College where he played football for four years and was named to the team of the decade for the 1960s as a defensive tackle; and

Whereas, he was assistant football coach at Woodruff High School from 1969 to 1977, and he was head football coach at schools throughout the Upstate, including Ninety Six High School for ten seasons, Union High School for twelve seasons, and Greenwood High School for eleven seasons; and

Whereas, with a standard of excellence that inspired his players and encouraged his fans, he is one of only two coaches to win state championship football titles at three different high schools; and

Whereas, Coach Dula served as the past president of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA) and is currently the organization's executive director, and he served as a member of the South Carolina High School Executive League from 1990 to 1994; and

Whereas, his distinguished accolades include being chosen to carry the Olympic torch through Union in 1996, receiving the award for Athletic Director for the 2002-2003 school year and the Charles E. Stewart Award in 2006 both from SCACA, and garnering the state's highest award for civilian service, the Order of the Palmetto, in 2009; and

Whereas, an active and hard-working member of Main Street United Methodist Church of Greenwood, he along with his beloved wife Mary raised a fine daughter Mary Kate, who practices nursing at Roper Hospital in Charleston; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives express their gratitude for the contributions that R. Shell Dula has made to the youth of this fine State and for the pride and recognition he has brought to his profession and his community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Coach R. Shell Dula, and congratulate him for receiving the 2010 Long Cane District of the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award for his dedicated service to the youth of Greenwood County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach R. Shell Dula.
