VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE 1960 GRADUATING CLASS OF JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL IN CAMDEN ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY ON MAY 15, 2010, AND TO COMMEND THEM FOR THEIR MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND TO OUR FINE STATE AND NATION.
Whereas, founded as a small frame school in 1867 through the efforts of Reverend B. F. Whittmore, Jackson School served to provide African-American students a quality education until it closed in 1970; and
Whereas, housed in a two-story frame building, the school served students through the seventh grade until the construction of a new Jackson High School was completed in 1924, and in 1926 the first class graduated from the four-year program; and
Whereas, the two-story brick structure that replaced the old wooden elementary school was built 1936, and a two-story wing was added in 1946 and a cafeteria in 1957; and
Whereas, shortly after the completion of a new building for the high school in 1954, the class of 1960 proudly matriculated into Jackson High School; and
Whereas, almost a century after it opened, the students in the Class of 1960 entered the halls of the school and after graduation became some of the communities leading citizens; and
Whereas, some of the graduates served in the United States Armed Forces, and others have served their communities in various fields and professions, including a member of this very body, District 82 Representative William Clyburn; and
Whereas, in celebration of their fiftieth anniversary, the Class of 1960 will hold festivities from May 14 through May 16, 2010, and will hold a banquet on May 15 at the Galleria in Camden; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the legacy left on our fine State by the Jackson School, and congratulate the graduating Class of 1960 for reaching their special half-century milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate and honor the members of the 1960 graduating class of Jackson High School in Camden on the occasion of their golden anniversary on May 15, 2010, and commend them for their many accomplishments and contributions to their communities and to our fine State and nation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Evelyn W. Gibson for the Jackson High School Class of 1960.
