A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REVEREND ROBERT G. RIEGEL OF COLUMBIA, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Reverend Robert G. Riegel will be celebrating the remarkable milestone of his eightieth birthday at a gala to be held in his honor on May 20, 2010, at Satterlee Hall of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral; and

Whereas, the son of Mary Gambrell Riegel and Theodore Riegel, Bob Riegel was born in New York City on May 20, 1930; and

Whereas, ordained a deacon in the summer of 1955 and a priest later that year, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College in 1959; and

Whereas, he completed his theological studies at Virginia Theological Seminary and earned a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1981 from Voorhees College; and

Whereas, from 1955 until 1959, Bob Riegel served as associate rector of St. Luke's Church in Atlanta and then accepted a call to be the rector of St. James Church in Greenville, where he served almost thirty years; and

Whereas, he also served on his denomination's Provincial Youth Council from 1958 to 1961, as chaplain of Furman University from 1960 to 1961, and served a year as the chairman of the Diocesan Youth Commission; and

Whereas, actively engaged in helping meet the needs in his community, he has participated in numerous church and civic endeavors benefiting the parishioners he serves; and

Whereas, he married his beloved wife Keren in 1983, and they have four fine children; and

Whereas, in October of 1987, he accepted the call to serve as Canon Missioner for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and has served there with distinction for over twenty years, now serving as Canon Associate for Pastoral Care; and

Whereas, Bob Reigel is beloved by his parishioners, respected by his colleagues, and greatly admired as a faithful pastor, patient teacher, and wise counselor; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the legacy of devoted service that Reverend Robert G. Riegel has made and are pleased to learn that he will celebrate the benchmark of eight decades surrounded by loving friends and family. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Reverend Robert G. Riegel of Columbia, upon the occasion of his eightieth birthday, and wish him continued good health and much happiness in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Bob Riegel.
