A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, STAFF, PARENTS, AND STUDENTS OF EDITH L. FRIERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OF WADMALAW ISLAND FOR THE SCHOOL'S OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC PROGRESS, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE SCHOOL ON RECEIVING A COVETED 2010 PALMETTO GOLD AWARD FOR CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP AND A 2010 PALMETTO SILVER AWARD FOR OVERALL GENERAL PERFORMANCE.

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to learn that Edith L. Frierson Elementary School of Wadmalaw Island has been granted a coveted 2010 Palmetto Gold Award for Closing the Gap and a 2010 Palmetto Silver Award for Overall General Performance; and

Whereas, each year, the South Carolina Department of Education recognizes state schools that have demonstrated high levels of performance and improvement, designating such schools Palmetto Gold Award and Palmetto Silver Award recipients; and

Whereas, basing their selections on the absolute and improvement ratings assigned to every South Carolina school on the previous year's report cards, the South Carolina Department of Education awards Palmetto Gold and Palmetto Silver honors in the spring of each year; and

Whereas, it took true teamwork and dedication for Edith L. Frierson Elementary School to capture these awards. More than 90 percent of the students and families at the school come from economically challenged circumstances and receive free or reduced lunch; and

Whereas, the 2007 South Carolina Annual School Report Card Summary gave Edith L. Frierson Elementary School an absolute rating of at-risk and a growth rating of below average; and

Whereas, the administration, faculty, staff, parents, and students of Edith L. Frierson Elementary School accepted the challenge to improve those ratings; and

Whereas, after two years of hard work, the 2009 South Carolina Annual School Report Card Summary reflected that Edith L. Frierson Elementary School had met its annual yearly-progress goals with an absolute rating of average and a growth rating of good, exceeding the overall growth rating of the Charleston County School District; and

Whereas, these improved ratings enabled the school to capture a 2010 Palmetto Gold Award for Closing the Achievement Gap and a 2010 Palmetto Silver Award for Overall General Performance, demonstrating what can be accomplished when all stakeholders have high expectations and strive to help students reach the full measure of their talents and skills; and

Whereas, encouraging and fully expecting continued academic progress from this now-standout school, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in recognizing the fine educational achievements of Edith L. Frierson Elementary School. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize the administration, faculty, staff, parents, and students of Edith L. Frierson Elementary School of Wadmalaw Island for the school's outstanding academic progress, and congratulate the school on receiving a coveted 2010 Palmetto Gold Award for Closing the Achievement Gap and a 2010 Palmetto Silver Award for Overall General Performance.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Principal Blondell B. Adams on behalf of Edith L. Frierson Elementary School.
