TO DECLARE SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2009, AS THE GIDEONS INTERNATIONAL DAY IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, The Gideons International is a worldwide organization devoted to the distribution of The Bible, in whole or in part, in designated locations including hotels, hospitals, prisons, convalescent homes, lobby areas at doctors' and dentists' offices, fire stations, police stations, rescue squads, attorneys' offices, and at or near schools, colleges, and universities; and
Whereas, The Gideons International has placed over 1.5 billion copies of the scriptures since the origin the organization in 1899; and
Whereas, over 500,000,000 of those scriptures have been placed or distributed since that fateful day in our nation's history, September 11, 2001; and
Whereas, the Senate of South Carolina recognizes the humane work The Gideons International provides to people in 188 countries around the globe and in every community in our beloved State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate of South Carolina declares Sunday, May 3, 2009, as The Gideons International Day in South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The Gideons International.
