A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF JASPER COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND THE COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE CITIZENS OF JASPER COUNTY FOR A CENTURY OF DISPLAYING THE CHARM AND DIGNITY OF THIS SOUTH CAROLINA TREASURE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Jasper County will reach the milestone of its one hundredth anniversary and will be hosting a celebration of that event on January 30, 2012; and

Whereas, nestled in the Lowcountry splendor between the Savannah River and the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Jasper County quietly boasts enchanting coastal plains filled with spreading moss-covered live oaks, supple palmettos, and stately pines; and

Whereas, inhabited by the Yemassee and Coosaw Indians before colonial times, Jasper County now claims a population that has grown to nearly twenty-five thousand citizens; and

Whereas, named for Sergeant William Jasper, who valiantly leaped to the defense of the South Carolina flag while serving under Francis Marion in the first defense of Charleston against the British, Jasper County was established as a county by an act of the General Assembly on January 30, 1912, from portions of Beaufort and Hampton Counties; and

Whereas, Jasper County possesses national and state heritage that includes the defeat of federal troops by the Confederate army during the Civil War at the battle of Honey Hill in Jasper County in November 1864; and

Whereas, located within the six hundred sixty-two square miles of Jasper County, the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge protects an amazing variety of wild species ranging from alligators to marsh hens; and

Whereas, the City of Ridgeland in the geographic center of the county serves as the county seat, in the midst of former rice plantations which have now begun to bustle with business and commerce; and

Whereas, with pomp and ceremony, fellowship and friends on January 30, 2012, Jasper County will hold a celebration to recall a century of community life and to anticipate a bright future enhanced by the rich heritage of the past. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, celebrate the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of Jasper County, and congratulate the city council and the citizens of Jasper County for a century of displaying the charm and dignity of this South Carolina treasure.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Andrew Fulghum, County Administrator of Jasper County.
