A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE OUTSTANDING SCHOOL LEADERSHIP OF DENISE KHAALID, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT SOUTH POINTE HIGH SCHOOL, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED THE 2012 NATIONAL NASSP/VIRCO ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Denise Khaalid, Assistant Principal of South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, was named the 2012 National NASSP/Virco Assistant Principal of the Year; and

Whereas, with a bachelor's in English and a master's in educational leadership, both from Winthrop University, Ms. Khaalid began her career as an English teacher at Sullivan Middle School in York 3 in 1995; and

Whereas, since 2004, she has served as an assistant principal in York 3 and since 2005 as the assistant principal at South Pointe High School; and

Whereas, NASSP and school furniture manufacturer Virco Inc. annually honor an assistant principal from each of the fifty states. The selection criteria include outstanding collaborative leadership; significant contributions to curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and successful school personalization; and

Whereas, she was selected as South Carolina Assistant Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators from a pool of over fifteen hundred assistant principals in the State, and in this national honor she was recognized from tens of thousands of assistant principals across the nation in both public and private schools; and

Whereas, the overseer of numerous parent and community partnerships, Ms. Khaalid facilitates professional learning among staff members and coordinates the school's dual-credit and High Schools That Work programs; and

Whereas, she and her staff launched a uniform grading policy, and established a standard homework policy, redesigned the school's master schedule, and developed common syllabi and exams within the various departments; and

Whereas, by reducing class sizes and providing high-interest reading material for students, professional development for teachers, and targeted small-group instruction, Ms. Khaalid has increased the school's emphasis on literacy; and

Whereas, under her leadership South Pointe High School which opened in 2005 has launched a freshman academy and implemented open-access International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs; and

Whereas, she maintains relationships with local colleges and businesses as part of her responsibility for the school's dual-credit program, and she collaborated with a technical college to increase the program to nearly one hundred students, more than seven percent of the school's student body population; and

Whereas, as an active member of Freedom Temple Ministries, she serves the church as a Sunday school teacher and as a youth ministry teacher; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are grateful for the standard of excellence that Denise Khaalid has set in her school, in her community, and in South Carolina and for the devoted service that she has furnished to educate students in the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate recognize and honor the outstanding school leadership of Denise Khaalid, Assistant Principal at South Pointe High School, and congratulate her upon being named the 2012 National NASSP/Virco Assistant Principal of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Denise Khaalid.
