A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. LIZZIE BELL WOODS OF JASPER COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDRED FOURTH BIRTHDAY, TO HONOR HER AS GRAND MARSHAL OF THE 2010 GOPHER HILL FESTIVAL, AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to learn that Mrs. Lizzie Bell Woods of Jasper County celebrated her one hundred fourth birthday on November 27, 2010; and

Whereas, Mrs. Woods was born on November 27, 1906, when the twentieth century was still in its youth, and she has been witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, the daughter of John Walter and Golda Virginia Malphrus, Lizzie Bell Woods grew up as one of fifteen siblings in Ridgeland, where she still resides; and

Whereas, at the age of eighteen, the young Lizzie Bell married Marion Cleland. Within two years, she was a widow with two children, Mildred and Lonnie. A year later, she married Hady Roach, and the couple had two additional children, Verna Mae and Ted. In 1974, again a widow, she married her childhood sweetheart, Gregory Woods; and

Whereas, after Mr. Woods passed away, Mrs. Woods lived alone until she was one hundred one, moving to the Ridgeland Nursing Center in 2007; and

Whereas, still active, she crafts silk flowers, lace, and ribbons into pillows, hats, and other creations that still give her and many others much joy; and

Whereas, in earlier days, Mrs. Woods was a first-class seamstress, worked at several jobs, and earned a reputation as a fantastic cook, especially with her apple turnovers. She grew vegetables and gave them away. She made fancy pillows that can be found in homes all over the Lowcountry and won awards from the garden club for the gorgeous flowers at her Green Street home, but her proudest accomplishment is the family she raised; and

Whereas, with four children, twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, twenty-six great-great-grandchildren and six great-great-great-grandchildren, Lizzie Bell Woods has already created a legacy that also includes more friends than anyone could count; and

Whereas, she is Jasper County's oldest resident and a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; and

Whereas, in September 2010, Mrs. Woods was selected as grand marshal of the thirty-ninth annual Gopher Hill Festival, held in Ridgeway and a signal honor of that town; and

Whereas, the Senate is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her one hundred fourth birthday and on the occasion of her appointment as grand marshal of the Gopher Hill Festival. The members join with her family and friends in congratulating her and in wishing her many happy returns. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Lizzie Bell Woods of Jasper County on the occasion of her one hundred fourth birthday, honor her as grand marshal of the 2010 Gopher Hill Festival, and wish her continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mrs. Lizzie Bell Woods.
