VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. DAVID SPITTAL, PRESIDENT OF SOUTHERN WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY, UPON HIS RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH FULFILLMENT AND SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Dr. David Spittal, president of Southern Wesleyan University (SWU) in Central, will retire at the close of the current school year; and
Whereas, a graduate of Ball State University in Indiana, Dr. Spittal began his long career in education teaching secondary music and fine arts. In 1975, he launched his administrative career; and
Whereas, throughout his career, Dr. Spittal has served as an educator, having to his credit twenty-four years of service to Wesleyan higher education and twelve years as superintendent of schools in Indiana; and
Whereas, since 1994, he has served as president of Southern Wesleyan University, and upon retirement in June 2011, he will complete seventeen years of service there; and
Whereas, under his leadership, the university has experienced significant growth and development. Dr. Spittal has made great strides in expanding the academic offerings and beautiful campus of Southern Wesleyan University and has been a catalyst for developing a strong bond between SWU and the community; and
Whereas, after retirement, Dr. Spittal and his wife, Donna, look forward to living closer to their children and grandchildren in Illinois, and they plan to travel and spend time with family and friends; and
Whereas, in recognition of his many years of outstanding service to Southern Wesleyan University, South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU), and the State of South Carolina, Dr. David Spittal was recognized on February 28, 2011, with an award bestowed by SCICU; and
Whereas, in addition, Dr. Spittal received the Civic Leadership Award at the Greater Easley Chamber of Commerce's annual gala February 19, 2011. During the event, Easley Chamber Director Kent Dykes applauded Dr. Spittal's fruitful years as president of the university, noting that he also served as co-chair of the Pickens County Vision 2025 Committee; and
Whereas, perhaps his greatest achievement has been to model a godly life before the students of the university he has so long and ably served, a legacy that will continue to assist these students in becoming all God means them to be; and
Whereas, having made his mark and set the bar of achievement extraordinarily high in his profession, Dr. Spittal will be remembered with affection and gratitude by colleagues, students and their families, and legislative friends for years to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. David Spittal, president of Southern Wesleyan University, upon his retirement, and wish him much fulfillment and success in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. David Spittal.
