A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR WALTER M. "BUD" MOORE, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE NASCAR HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Walter M. "Bud" Moore was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on May 23, 2011; and

Whereas, born in Spartanburg on May 25, 1925, Bud Moore was a decorated veteran of World War II and was a self-described "old country mechanic who loved to make 'em run fast"; and

Whereas, he gained considerable attention in 1957 when driver Buck Baker won the NASCAR Grand National championship with Bud Moore as his crew chief; and

Whereas, his notoriety grew in 1961 as a race-car owner when Joe Weatherly won eight of his twenty-four races driving Bud Moore's Pontiacs; Weatherly also won the 1962 and 1963 NASCAR Grand National championships driving for Moore; and

Whereas, sponsored by Motorcraft, his cars bore the number 15 and were usually painted red and white, and they continued to catch the eyes of fans everywhere in 1964 as Billy Wade grabbed five poles and won four Grand National races in a row in Moore's cars; and

Whereas, in 1968, Tiny Lund won the Grand American division championship driving for him, and Parnelli Jones won the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am championship in Moore's famous Boss 302 Mustang in 1970; and

Whereas, Buddy Baker won three straight races at Talladega for Moore in 1975 and 1976, and Bobby Allison won the Daytona 500 driving for Moore in 1978; and

Whereas, in his 37 years as a race-car owner, the likes of racing legends Fireball Roberts, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, and Darrell Waltrip have driven for him, and he has achieved 63 wins, 43 poles, and three NASCAR Grand National Division championships; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the celebrated career of Bud Moore and for the standard of excellence he brought to the race tracks of NASCAR. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Walter M. "Bud" Moore, upon his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Walter M. "Bud" Moore.
