A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ALVIN BROWN, A NATIVE OF ST. HELENA ISLAND, ON BEING ELECTED THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAYOR OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, AND TO OFFER MAYOR BROWN THE BEST WISHES OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AS HE TAKES UP HIS NEW DUTIES.

Whereas, elected on May 17, 2011, Alvin Brown took office as the first African-American mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, on July 1, 2011, succeeding Mayor John Peyton; and

Whereas, Mayor Brown was born on St. Helena Island. Moving to Jacksonville in 1981, he attended Edward Waters College and Jacksonville University, where he earned his bachelor's degree and a master's in business administration; and

Whereas, during the 1990s, he served as an adviser to Housing and Urban Development director Andrew Cuomo, President Bill Clinton, and Vice President Al Gore; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to pause in its deliberations to congratulate this son of South Carolina on this historic victory, his election as the first African-American mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, and wish him well in this new endeavor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Alvin Brown, a native of St. Helena Island, on being elected the first African-American mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, and offer Mayor Brown the best wishes of the South Carolina House of Representatives as he takes up his new duties.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Alvin Brown.
