A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LIEUTENANT COLONEL ROSE FITCHETT, M.D., M.P.H., UNITED STATES ARMY (RETIRED), FOR HER EIGHTEEN YEARS OF OUTSTANDING MILITARY SERVICE, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER ON BEING RECOGNIZED AS AN OUTSTANDING MILITARY WOMAN AT THE SPANN WATSON CHAPTER, TUSKEGEE AIRMEN, INC.'S APPRECIATION BANQUET FOR MILITARY WOMEN ON NOVEMBER 5, 2011.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, on behalf of all South Carolinians, acknowledge with deep appreciation the great sacrifice that the men and women of the United States Armed Forces make for the ideals of freedom and justice, so richly enjoyed in this nation; and

Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Rose Fitchett, M.D., M.P.H., United States Army (retired), stands high among those servicemen and women so honored by their country; and

Whereas, having entered military service in 1977, Dr. Fitchett served as a United States Army physician and flight surgeon. She holds a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Delaware State College and earned her M.D. at Hahnemann College of Medicine (now Drexel Institute) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After completing her internship and residency in internal medicine, she also earned a master's degree in public health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; and

Whereas, her numerous awards include Army Flight Surgeon Wings, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (Desert Storm), Humanitarian Service Medal, and Women in Government Award; and

Whereas, after her retirement from the military in 1995, she served as program manager in environmental medicine with the Department of Health and Environmental Control in Columbia, from which she retired in 2006 as a civilian. Since 2009, she has served as an instructor with the Columbia campus of the University of Phoenix; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives counts it a great privilege to honor Lieutenant Colonel Rose Fitchett, M.D., M.P.H., United States Army (retired), one of the Palmetto State's finest, and the members with one voice commend the dedicated, sacrificial labors of this worthy daughter of South Carolina in the military of our great country. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Lieutenant Colonel Rose Fitchett, M.D., M.P.H., United States Army (retired), for her eighteen years of outstanding military service, and congratulate her on being recognized as an outstanding military woman at the Spann Watson Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.'s Appreciation Banquet for Military Women on November 5, 2011.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Lieutenant Colonel Rose Fitchett.

Be it further resolved that the Governor be requested to declare November 5, 2011, "Military Women Day" in South Carolina.
