A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR FRANK "RABBIT" JOHNSON, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS INDUCTION INTO THE PIEDMONT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION'S HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Frank "Rabbit" Johnson will be inducted into the Piedmont Athletic Association's Hall of Fame at a gala to be held in Greenville on February 19, 2011; and

Whereas, Frank Johnson grew up in Greenville and attended Sterling High School where he lettered in both basketball and football and was named All High School and All State in football in 1948, 1949, and 1950; and

Whereas, his speed on the gridiron and his uncanny ability to change direction in mid-run gave him renown among the running backs of his day; and

Whereas, upon graduation from Sterling High School in 1951, he was drafted in the United States Army and served his country until 1953; and

Whereas, Frank Johnson was recruited in 1953 to play football for North Carolina A & T College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he earned status as All CIAA in 1954, 1955, and 1956 and continued his career in sports, playing semi-professional football from 1959 to 1961; and

Whereas, committed to his community, he has served with the Twelfth Street YMCA in Washington, DC, Boys and Girls Club and as a softball coach for ten years; and

Whereas, established in 1972 to commemorate and preserve the long-standing history of the five former historically black high schools in Greenville County, the Piedmont Athletic Association's Hall of Fame annually recognizes former athletes and coaches from each school for their outstanding accomplishments in high school sports and their exemplary service that continues to bring honor to their community; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the work of the Piedmont Athletic Association's Hall of Fame and for the pride and distinction that Frank "Rabbit" Johnson has brought to his former school and to his community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Frank "Rabbit" Johnson, upon the occasion of his induction into the Piedmont Athletic Association's Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Frank "Rabbit" Johnson.
