A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MAMIE BRUNSON DARBY OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Mamie Brunson Darby of Orangeburg County will celebrate her centennial birthday on February 26, 2012; and

Whereas, born on February 26, 1912, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has been witness to nearly all the incredible changes, advancements, and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, raised in Cameron and the Orangeburg area, she relocated to New York seeking better opportunities in the North when the Depression struck, and there she raised her family; and

Whereas, she had a long career as a seamstress in New York where she was a proud member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGW); and

Whereas, she reared two fine children, Ann Louvinia Darby and Henry Lee Darby, Jr., who was the first African-American Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, and

Whereas, she recalls sharecropping on Zimmerman Place and attending Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and St. Peters African Methodist Episcopal Church; and

Whereas, several years ago she returned with her daughter to her beloved Orangeburg where her family's lineage dates back to 1870; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are pleased to honor Mamie Brunson Darby on the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating this daughter of the Palmetto State on reaching such an extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mamie Brunson Darby of Orangeburg County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mamie Brunson Darby.
