A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE GLADYS ALBERTA DAVIS OF KNIGHTSVILLE ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Gladys Alberta Davis of Knightsville will celebrate her ninetieth birthday on July 21, 2012; and

Whereas, born on July 21, 1922, to Calhoun and Selma Ross Davis, Gladys Alberta Davis came into this world when the twentieth century was still in its youth, and she has been witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, Gladys attended schools in Lebanon and Dorchester before moving to Knightsville. She graduated from Summerville High School in 1940 and began working at the American Tobacco Cigar Factory in Charleston. There, she met the love of her life, Wade Hampton Shobe, whom she married on October 16, 1948; and

Whereas, already the proud father of daughters Gloria and Beatrice when he married Gladys, Wade was blessed with two more children when Gladys bore him daughters Jacquelyn and Pamela. While the couple's children were small, the young mother served her family as a homemaker, which included working at home, church, and school; and

Whereas, after her daughters graduated from high school, Gladys began another career as a food service technician for Dorchester School District Two. She retired after more than eighteen years of service in 1991; and

Whereas, a woman of faith, Gladys has held many positions for her church, relishing most of all her job as a Sunday School teacher. She began as a teenager at Boone Hill United Methodist Church, later joining Branch Methodist, which became the current Knightsville United Methodist Church. She has been teaching Sunday School for approximately seventy-five years; and

Whereas, she also has been a faithful mother and molder of character for her four children and has cared for her grandparents, parents, and husband through their terminal illnesses. Today, Gladys enjoys keeping up with eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, all who know her, whether they call her Sis, Mom, Granny Gladys, Aunt Gladys, Miss Gladys, or any of several other names, love and respect this venerable lady; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her ninetieth birthday, and the members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Gladys Alberta Davis of Knightsville on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and continued health and happiness.
