A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DEPUTY CHIEF JEROME TAYLOR OF THE CHARLESTON POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives honors individuals who freely give of their time and resources for the good of others; and

Whereas, Deputy Chief Jerome Taylor of the Charleston Police Department has contributed valuable community and public service to the citizens of the Palmetto State and is thereby worthy of praise; and

Whereas, in preparation for his life's work, he earned a bachelor's degree at Southern Illinois University, followed by a master's degree in management from Webster University. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy; and

Whereas, heeding the call of his country, Deputy Chief Taylor enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Vietnam. Upon discharge, he continued to serve in the Reserves. He was recalled to active duty during Desert Storm and Desert Shield; and

Whereas, presently, Deputy Chief Taylor is commander of the Investigation and Support Bureau at the Charleston Police Department, but over his many years of dedicated service, he has also taken up his duties in several other capacities. These include service as commander of the Operations Bureau, Special Operations, Central Investigation commander, SWAT Team commander, commander of the Uniform Patrol Division and deputy commander of the Administrative Bureau; and

Whereas, he also currently serves as an assessor with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement and previously served as a board member for the City of Charleston Employees Grievance Committee; and

Whereas, Jerome Taylor believes strongly in active community involvement, and he demonstrates that conviction far beyond his daily work. As a man of faith, he is a member of Greater Zion AME Church, where he serves on the steward board. His many other commitments include membership in the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and Prince Hall Masons; and

Whereas, his fine work has led to numerous awards from the Charleston Police Department, the military, and the community; and

Whereas, he and his wife, Joyce, are the proud parents of four daughters, Lisa, Varnshelle, Dawn, and Taniqua, who have given their parents the joy of several grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like Jerome Taylor who use their talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Deputy Chief Jerome Taylor of the Charleston Police Department for his outstanding community and public service to the people of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Deputy Chief Jerome Taylor.
