A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR COACH OLIVER "BUDDY" POUGH, HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING NAMED THE 2011 MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (MEAC) DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS FOR SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough was recognized as the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Distinguished Alumnus for South Carolina State University on March 10, 2011; and

Whereas, in 1975, Orangeburg native Buddy Pough earned a bachelor's degree from South Carolina State University and All-MEAC honors as an offensive lineman and helped the football team amass a 16-1 record during the 1974 and 1975 seasons; and

Whereas, from 1976 to 1979, he joined the coaching staff at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School before he returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1979, where he also earned a master's degree; and

Whereas, after he left the South Carolina State University coaching staff, he coached for a time at Keenan High School and then at Fairfield-Central High School, leading that school to a perfect 15-0 record and the Class AAA state championship in 1996; and

Whereas, one of the most successful high-school coaches in South Carolina, Coach Pough was named the South Carolina High School League Coach-of-the-Year in 1996, the first of three such awards; and

Whereas, for five seasons from 1997 to 2002, he served as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina, the last three as a running-back coach under then Head Coach Lou Holtz; and

Whereas, during his nine-year tenure as the fourteenth head football coach of his alma mater, he forged two MEAC championship teams, undefeated in the conference, in 2008 and 2009 and tied for the title in 2010; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Josie, he has reared two fine sons, Oliver "Bud" Pough and Lee Judson Pough; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful for the standard of excellence that Coach Buddy Pough has set during his successful career and for the significant impact he has had on the lives of countless athletes and fans in the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough, head football coach at South Carolina State University, and congratulate him for being named the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Distinguished Alumnus for South Carolina State University.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough.
