VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SADNESS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON LEARNING OF THE LOSS OF MR. ROBERT LANCASTER SMITH, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Robert Lancaster Smith, 90, on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home; and
Whereas, Mr. Smith was born on February 19, 1921, in Glenn Springs, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Albert Clifton Smith, M.D. and Emma White Freeman Smith; and
Whereas, he attended Glenn Springs Grammar and Pauline High Schools and Clemson Military College; and
Whereas, he began his military career serving in the European Military Theatre, WWII from 1944-1946, with Company A 255th Infantry, 63rd Division of the United States Army, earning the rank of Sergeant and Squad Leader 604 and being awarded the Bronze Star for Valor; and
Whereas, after his military career, Mr. Smith was employed by Draper Corporation-North American Rockwell, from which he retired; and
Whereas, he was a lifelong member of Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder (Emeritus), Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, Clerk of Session, and a member of the choir for over sixty years; and
Whereas, a fifty-year member of Calhoun Lodge #81 AFM, he served as a Worshipful Master, Secretary, and 32nd Degree Shriner of the Hejaz Temple; and
Whereas, active in his community, Mr. Smith was a life member of the PTA, serving as first president of the Pauline-Glenn Springs School PTA and the Roebuck Band Booster Club. In addition, he was also an active member of the Sons of the Confederacy and he spent many hours in his workshop in the log cabin behind Camp Hill, making bluebird boxes, which are distributed all over Spartanburg County; and
Whereas, Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife of fifty-eight years, Corrine Bagwell Smith, and he is survived by their three wonderful daughters, Rebecca Smith Bray, Margaret Smith Burnette, and Linda Smith Powell; and
Whereas, he will forever be remembered for his love of family and friends and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, express the profound sadness of the members of the South Carolina Senate upon learning of the loss of Mr. Robert Lancaster Smith, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mr. Robert Lancaster Smith.
