A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED AT THE JUNCTURE OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS 9 AND 31 IN HORRY COUNTY "CONGRESSMAN JOHN W. JENRETTE, JR. INTERSECTION" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERSECTION THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "CONGRESSMAN JOHN W. JENRETTE, JR. INTERSECTION".

Whereas, John W. Jenrette, Jr., has spent much of his life in the arena of public service on behalf of the people of South Carolina; and

Whereas, born in Horry County, the Myrtle Beach resident earned his L.L.B. at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1962. He opened a private law practice in Ocean Drive Beach (now North Myrtle Beach), accepting as payment from his first client a bushel of fresh oysters; and

Whereas, John Jenrette's public service includes duties as a city judge for North Myrtle Beach (1962-65), city attorney for North Myrtle Beach (1965-69), member of the South Carolina House of Representatives (1964-1972), and United States Congressman for South Carolina (1975-1980); and

Whereas, during his service as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, he initiated the movement to purchase the former Columbia Post Office building and transform it into a home for the South Carolina Supreme Court. The finished project became a beautiful addition to Columbia's government complex, one that today's South Carolinians continue to enjoy; and

Whereas, he was elected Freshman Majority Whip during his service in the United States Congress and was the founder and first chair of the U.S. Congressional Travel and Tourism Caucus. The many tasks he completed during his years in Congress include negotiating with Idi Amin, a friend of Iran, for release of American hostages; and

Whereas, married to Rosemary, John Jenrette is the proud father of two fine children, Elizabeth Jenrette Teal and Hal Hampton Jenrette, as well as the delighted grandfather of Tradd and Beau Teal; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to name a highway facility in Horry County in honor of this distinguished son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the juncture of South Carolina Highways 9 and 31 in Horry County "Congressman John W. Jenrette, Jr. Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this intersection that contain the words "Congressman John W. Jenrette, Jr. Intersection".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
