TO RECOGNIZE CANAAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF SMYRNA, SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Canaan United Methodist Church of Smyrna, South Carolina will celebrate two hundred years of serving the community at a Homecoming celebration on October 14, 2012; and
Whereas, the church was founded in 1812 on a modest twenty-two acres of land where it is believed an elevated stand was constructed on the site and an arbor was erected nearby where services were held when the weather permitted; and
Whereas, the stand and arbor were used for about twenty-five years, and a church building constructed of hewn pine logs was built in the 1830s. This log building served the congregation well until 1859 when a frame church was built; and
Whereas, the frame church was well built and was used for nearly one hundred years. In 1952 a new brick and mortar church was built and is still used today for worship led by Reverend Larry Hyder; and
Whereas, we are delighted to have this opportunity to share in the joy of the church's bicentennial celebration. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Canaan United Methodist Church on the splendid occasion of its two hundredth anniversary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Canaan United Methodist Church.
