A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR THEIR WONDERFUL EFFORTS IN HELPING SOUTH CAROLINA'S YOUTH PREPARE FOR A PRODUCTIVE LIFE, TO RECOGNIZE THE TWELVE YOUNG PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS THROUGHOUT THE STATE WHO HAVE BEEN NAMED 2011 YOUTH OF THE YEAR BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA ALLIANCE OF BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS, AND TO DECLARE THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2011, AS "BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS DAY" AT THE STATE HOUSE.

Whereas, in every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them; and

Whereas, Boys & Girls Clubs offer that caring and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and influence; and

Whereas, the Boys and Girls Clubs in South Carolina provide programs in character and leadership development, health and life skills, education and career development, the arts, and sports and recreation; and

Whereas, Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow while having fun. They are truly the "Positive Place for Kids"; and

Whereas, currently, eighteen Boys and Girls Club organizations operate ninety club sites in South Carolina. These sites provide services to more than 53,747 youth each year; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that twelve young people from different Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the Palmetto State have been named 2011 South Carolina Youth of the Year. These youth and their clubs are:

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate

Timothy J. Lindsey;

Fort Jackson Youth Services

Clark P. DeBerry;

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area

Patrick J. McKnight;

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Sumter

Antonio L. Riley;

Orangeburg Area Boys & Girls Club

Kristen Gillens;

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands

Wilyem L. Cain;

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry

Angel Jones;

Charleston Air Force Base Youth Programs

Kai C. Holnes;

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Greenville

Jewell L. Rivers;

The Salvation Army/Nancy M. Thurmond Boys & Girls Club

Frances G. Johnson;

Shaw Air Force Base Youth Center

Dyshali R. Lammey;

Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand

Bryanna L. Paulhus;

Whereas, cognizant that South Carolina's Boys & Girls Clubs are a great investment in the youth of our State, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in recognizing and honoring each of these twelve outstanding young people upon their receipt of a 2011 Youth of the Year award. In addition, the members commend and thank the club staff and volunteers for their critical roles in shaping the lives of these youth. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Carolina for their wonderful efforts in helping South Carolina's youth prepare for a productive life, recognize the twelve young people from different Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the State who have been named 2011 Youth of the Year by the South Carolina Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, and declare Thursday, April 14, 2011, as "Boys and Girls Clubs Day" at the State House.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each of the twelve young people named 2011 Youth of the Year in care of their home clubs.
