A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND CHAPLAIN EVA SMITH FOR HER TWELVE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS A MINISTER AT THE SHERIFF AL CANNON DETENTION CENTER IN NORTH CHARLESTON AND TO WISH HER GOD'S RICHEST BLESSINGS AS SHE CONTINUES TO SERVE THE LORD.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to nurture the souls of men; and

Whereas, Chaplain Eva Smith of the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston stands among their number as an outstanding minister, one much admired by clerical colleagues, laymen, and the surrounding community alike; and

Whereas, beginning as a volunteer, Eva Smith became the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center's full-time chaplain in 2010. Among many other duties, she preaches, teaches, counsels, and distributes biblical materials and resources to inmates who wish to begin or further the practice of their faith, ministering to 465 staff members and fifty or more chaplain aides. She provides material to inmates equally, whatever their faith; and

Whereas, in her concern for the spiritual well-being of her charges, she also goes into the community and requests donations to the center from various churches and other organizations. She develops and maintains relationships with faith-based community programs; and

Whereas, Chaplain Smith demonstrates caring and compassion in many situations requiring her assistance, as in her ministry to visitors and family members in hospital settings; and

Whereas, in preparation for her ministry, Chaplain Eva Smith attended a North Carolina school of theology, receiving her master's degree in 2011. In addition to her work at the center, she is pastor of El-Shaddai Trumpet Tower Networking Ministry. Her desire is to bring many churches together in Christ; and

Whereas, now a widow, Chaplain Smith and her late husband were blessed with three children, who have given their parents the joy of eight grandchildren; and

Whereas, she has not gone unappreciated. Honors include the Carroll B. Gordon Award (2006 and 2008), which recognizes unwavering commitment and devotion to the mission of the detention center and concern for others, based on benevolence and charitable compassion. Chaplain Smith has also received four Civilian of the Quarter awards from the sheriff of Charleston County; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives, cognizant of her many years of spiritual nourishment of those under her care, expresses its grateful thanks to Chaplain Smith and wishes her God's best as she continues to run the race the Lord has set before her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Chaplain Eva Smith for her twelve years of dedicated service as a minister at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston and wish her God's richest blessings as she continues to serve the Lord.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Chaplain Eva Smith.
