TO DESIGNATE THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2011, AS "HOLD OUT FOR HUNGER DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA TO ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS TO SKIP ONE MEAL ON THIS DAY TO RECOGNIZE THE PLIGHT OF HUNGER IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, one in four children under age five and one in five children under age eighteen go to bed hungry in South Carolina every night; and
Whereas, the current economic crisis has increased the demand for emergency food services in our State; and
Whereas, current support for emergency food organizations such as Harvest Hope is unable to keep up with this increased demand; and
Whereas, folks in South Carolina are encouraged to forego a meal on this day and donate the money they would have spent on their missed meal to Harvest Hope; and
Whereas, this event is being sponsored by the Harvest Hope Producers (H2P), a young professionals group who are mobilizing young leaders in South Carolina actively engaging in the fight against hunger. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That Thursday, April 14, 2011, be designated as "Hold Out for Hunger Day" to encourage individuals (young and old) to skip one meal on this day to recognize the plight of hunger in South Carolina, and contribute the savings from that meal to Harvest Hope or another local organization fighting hunger in our State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Harvest Hope Producers.
