A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD TEAM ON WINNING THE 2013 BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO SALUTE THE TEAM'S OUTSTANDING PLAYERS AND COACHES.

Whereas, on February 22, 2013, the Coastal Carolina University women's indoor track and field team won its fifth Big South Championship title in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, beating out Liberty in a magnificent show of talent; and

Whereas, the Chanticleers, twenty-nine strong, headed into the meet leading the way in the conference's season performance rankings and on their way to the crown set two Big South Championship records; and

Whereas, after three straight runner-up finishes to Liberty, the Chanticleers got over the hump against the Flames, racking up 182 points in the two-day event and nailing its first title since 2008; and

Whereas, clearly on a mission, the Chants put out a total team effort that paid off, bringing proud grins to the faces of Head Coach Alan Connie and his staff. These gifted coaches used their own athletic abilities to build their team into a powerhouse to be reckoned with, as the competition discovered; and

Whereas, making a sweet victory even sweeter, team member Erica Peake, named Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer, set a new championship mark in the 200 with a time of 24.07. In addition, Jessica Gelibert earned the Women's Freshman of the Year honor, and Mary Lawrence was named to the Women's All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year; and

Whereas, Coach Connie increased his record for Big South Coach of the Year honors to thirty-one, ten of them in indoor track. Finally, the Chanticleers' 4x400 relay team set a championship record in winning that event to finish off the meet in style; and

Whereas, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in recognizing the young women of the Coastal Carolina University indoor track and field team for leading with excellence both in the classroom and on the field and expects to hear of continued great achievements in the years ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor the Coastal Carolina University women's indoor track and field team on winning the 2013 Big South Tournament Championship title and salute the team's outstanding players and coaches.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to President David A. DeCenzo and to Head Coach Alan Connie of Coastal Carolina University.
