A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE GIBBS CANCER CENTER & RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN SPARTANBURG ON BEING AWARDED A THREE-YEAR TERM OF ACCREDITATION IN RADIATION ONCOLOGY BY THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RADIOLOGY.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute in Spartanburg was recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology (ACR); and

Whereas, radiation oncology, or radiation therapy, is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to cure cancer or relieve a cancer patient's pain; and

Whereas, the ACR is the nation's oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body, with nearly five hundred accredited sites and twenty-five years of accreditation experience. The ACR seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting specific practice guidelines and technical standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field; and

Whereas, the only cancer center in the Upstate to achieve ACR accreditation, Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute is a nationally recognized cancer treatment and research facility associated with the National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Center program, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Network; and

Whereas, with sites in Spartanburg, Gaffney, and Greer, Gibbs is a proven leader in providing effective cancer treatment through advanced technology, professional expertise, and an exceptional level of personalized care. The Gibbs oncology program, which also includes the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health, has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons as offering high-quality cancer care. In 2012, Gibbs joined forces with Bon Secours St. Francis Health System to expand world-class oncology services and clinical research in the Upstate; and

Whereas, grateful for Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute's dedication to exceptional patient care, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the center's latest accomplishment, accreditation in radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute in Spartanburg on being awarded a three-year term of accreditation in radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute.
