VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DIANE BROWN FOR HER EXCEPTIONAL WORK AS AN EDUCATOR IN THE PALMETTO STATE AND TO CONGRATULATE HER FOR BEING NAMED THE 2012 YORK SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE TEACHER OF THE YEAR.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Diane Brown was named the 2012 York School District One Teacher of the Year during the Teacher of the Year banquet on May 8, 2012; and
Whereas, during the ceremony, she was presented with the award from the Greater York County Chamber and a gift card; and
Whereas, she earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts with a major in textile design from the Syracuse University in New York and a master's degree in education from Columbia College; and
Whereas, now in her twelfth year as an educator, Ms. Brown has served for five years at Hunter Street Elementary School as an art teacher and acquired advanced credentials of National Board Certification in 2007; and
Whereas, a dedicated and industrious teacher who loves art and literacy, she has played a key role in writing two grants for arts integration, one that allowed her to visit other school art programs and another that enabled Hunter Street's fourth-grade students to work with renowned potter Bob Doster; and
Whereas, she consistently engages her students and not only teaches them to be creative, but also uses creativity in her classroom. For the last two years she brought Charleston native Sara Edwards-Hammond to Hunter Street Elementary to work with third graders to make sweet grass baskets; and
Whereas, in 2010, Ms. Brown successfully launched the Artist Writer's Workshop (AWW) with fourth-grade classes, and during the summer of 2011, she traveled to the University of New Hampshire to study with the creator of AWW, Beth Olshansky, and has since used the program to enhance the writing ability of students in kindergarten through the fourth grade; and
Whereas, she is an integral part of a dedicated, outstanding force of teachers in our State who are preparing students in South Carolina to meet the demands of this millennium with meaningful education and confident skills; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the exemplary service as an educator that Diane Brown has contributed to York School District One and for the recognition she has received as the district's 2012 Teacher of the Year. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Diane Brown for her exceptional work as an educator in the Palmetto State and congratulate her for being named the 2012 York School District One Teacher of the Year.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Diane Brown.
