A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE HENRY C. GILES, JR., PRESIDENT OF SPARTANBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE, ON FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE TO THAT INSTITUTION AND TO HONOR HIM FOR HIS STRONG COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, since 1969, Spartanburg Community College, formerly known as Spartanburg Technical College, has enjoyed the benefit of the dedication, experience, and leadership of Mr. Henry C. Giles, who on August 21, 2014, will celebrate nearly a half century of service at that fine institution, the past two years as interim president, president, and the past fifteen as executive vice president; and

Whereas, during his forty-five-year tenure at Spartanburg Community College, Mr. Giles, well respected by his colleagues, served first as a mathematics teacher. He progressed through the ranks, serving as coordinator of special projects, director of special projects, planning and grants coordinator, director of development, vice president for development, vice president for academic affairs, senior vice president for business affairs, and, finally, his present posts as executive vice president, interim president, and president; and

Whereas, in preparation for his distinguished career, the young Henry Giles attended Wofford College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics, followed by a Master of Arts in Teaching (mathematics) at Converse College. In addition, he pursued further graduate work in higher-education administration at Florida's Nova University and in management at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Henry Giles believes strongly in personal involvement with his community, and his convictions have led him to serve that community, as well as the broader community of South Carolina, in numerous capacities. These include past or present membership in various civic and professional organizations, such as the Spartanburg Chapter of the National Association of Accountants, Spartanburg County Board of Education, Leadership Spartanburg Alumni Association Board of Directors, Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce Board, and Cowpens Planning Commission; and

Whereas, in addition, Mr. Giles has served as a president of the East Spartanburg Rotary Club, on the Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg Board, as president and board member of Kiwanis Club of Rutherfordton, and on the Rutherfordton Town Council; and

Whereas, the General Assembly, grateful for Mr. Giles's many years of faithfulness in serving the people of South Carolina, takes great pleasure in commending him for his contributions to education in this great State, especially in the Spartanburg area. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Henry C. Giles, Jr., president of Spartanburg Community College, on forty-five years of service to that institution and honor him for his strong commitment to education in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Henry Giles.
