A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DOROTHY GEORGE HINES OF FLORENCE ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, THANK HER FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS A REGISTERED NURSE, AND WISH HER WELL IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives notes that for twenty-five years, Dorothy George Hines of Florence has served as a registered nurse at Carolinas Hospital System and will soon embark on a well-deserved retirement; and

Whereas, a native of Pamplico and current resident of Florence, Dorothy George Hines is a 1964 graduate of Wilson High School and the first African-American graduate of the Florence Program of Practical Nursing. Having a desire to advance her education, she completed her associate of sciences degree in nursing at Hartford Community College in 1974, where she became a registered nurse, and she has done further study at Virginia State and Francis Marion University; and

Whereas, Ms. Hines' area of specialty in nursing is intravenous therapy in the treatment of cancer, and she received training for this specialty at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Over the course of her career, she has worked in many capacities in the nursing field. After returning to Florence in the 1970s, she took up her duties at Faith Nursing Home in the capacity of director of nursing for eleven years. For the past twenty-five years, she has served as a registered nurse at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Dorothy Hines loves and gives the utmost care to her patients and their families; and

Whereas, she believes strongly in personal involvement with her community, and her convictions have led her to benefit that community through service with a number of organizations. These include Pee Dee Nurses Association (past president), Florence County NAACP (past vice president), Florence County Democratic Party (past vice president and state delegate), Florence County Habitat for Humanity (board member), and Health Facilities Credit Union (board member). Further, she is a member of the Azalea Home and Garden Club, Rose Garden Club, Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, South Carolina Nurses Association, City of Florence Planning Commission, and Williams Heights Neighborhood Crime Watch (current president); and

Whereas, as a woman of faith, Dorothy Hines is an active member of New Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as a deaconess, missionary, and Sunday School teacher; and

Whereas, she long has found strength in the strong support of her family and enjoys spending time with her daughter, son-in-law, and two delightful grandchildren in Tampa, Florida. In addition to her visits to Florida, she has traveled extensively throughout North and South America, the Caribbean, and Europe, with highlight trips to Paris, London, and the Vatican; and

Whereas, on the occasion of her retirement, Dorothy's colleagues will gather to honor her at a celebratory event, to be held June 14, 2014; and

Whereas, the House, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and excellence Dorothy Hines has bestowed on this great State, takes great pleasure in wishing her well as she enters retirement and trusts she will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dorothy George Hines of Florence on the occasion of her retirement, thank her for her many years of dedicated service as a registered nurse, and wish her well in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Dorothy George Hines.
