A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE, HONOR, AND THANK REPRESENTATIVE J. ROLAND SMITH OF AIKEN COUNTY FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, TO CONGRATULATE HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Representative J. Roland Smith has served in the South Carolina House of Representatives representing House District 84 and Aiken County for twenty-six years; and

Whereas, a native of Aiken County, Representative Smith was born on February 26, 1933 to Mae Bell Smith Craig; and

Whereas, Representative Smith attended the Universal Bible Institute in Alamo, Tennessee, where he received a D.D. He received additional education from the University of South Carolina Aiken and from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and

Whereas, Representative Smith married the former Peggy C. Cato on March 3, 1953, and the two have been blessed with three children, Garry, Todd, and Caroline, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, Representative Smith served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He is also a retired rural letter carrier and retired minister with forty years of service; and

Whereas, Representative Smith served on the Beech Island Water Commission for ten years. He served as chairman, secretary and treasurer during his time with the Commission. He also served on the Aiken County School Board for six years, four of which he was vice chairman. Further, Representative Smith serves as chairman of the Aiken County Legislative Delegation, a position he has held for eighteen years; and

Whereas, Representative Smith was sworn in as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives to represent District 84 on March 7, 1989 and has served the District and our State continuously until his retirement; and

Whereas, during his tenure in the South Carolina House of Representatives, Representative Smith served on the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, the Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee, the Property and Casualty Insurance Subcommittee, and the Labor and Commerce Subcommittee. He has also served on the Ways and Means Committee, as chairman of the Ways and Means Public Education and Special Schools Subcommittee, the Economic Development Subcommittee, and the Other Taxes Subcommittee. Representative Smith was chairman of the House Ethics Committee for eleven years. He also served as chairman of the Governor's Economic Development Task Force for the House of Representatives; and

Whereas, Representative Smith currently serves as chairman of the House Ways and Means Transportation Subcommittee, which is comprised of sixteen agencies, including the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles; and

Whereas, Representative Smith is legendary for his faithful and diligent service to his many constituents in House District 84; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are grateful for the many years of dedication that Representative Smith has given to the citizens of Aiken County and wish him well as he enters his retirement. His dedication to public service, to his constituents, and to our state will serve as a model for generations to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate, by this resolution, recognizes, thanks, and honors Representative J. Roland Smith of Aiken for his many years of service in the South Carolina House of Representatives, congratulates him upon the occasion of his retirement, and wishes him much success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Representative J. Roland Smith.
