A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND REMEMBER THE SUPREME SACRIFICE MADE BY SPECIALIST EMBER M. ALT OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY WHILE SHE WAS SERVING A TOUR OF MILITARY DUTY AT BAGRAM AIR BASE, AFGHANISTAN, AND TO EXPRESS TO HER FAMILY THE PROFOUND APPRECIATION OF A GRATEFUL STATE AND NATION FOR HER LIFE, SACRIFICE, AND SERVICE.

Whereas, with deep appreciation, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly honor, on behalf of all South Carolinians, the great sacrifice that the men and women of the United States Armed Forces make for the ideals of liberty and justice so richly enjoyed in this nation; and

Whereas, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the age of twenty-one, Specialist Ember M. Alt of Beech Island gave her life near Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, after suffering wounds from enemy forces that attacked her unit with indirect fire; and

Whereas, assigned to the 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, Colorado, during Operation Enduring Freedom, Specialist Alt answered her country's call and deployed with her company to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan; and

Whereas, she graduated from Killeen High School in Texas in 2009, where she excelled in track and helped to lead her team to the state finals her senior year; and

Whereas, a strong individual and leader and talented in music and art, Specialist Alt attended Central Texas College after high school with a desire to study art, and she enlisted in the United States Army in the spring of 2011; and

Whereas, she left behind her parents Chuck Alt of Killeen, Texas; Cynthia Merchant of Gulfport, Mississippi; and Rick and Jennifer Owens of Killeen; her siblings Kayla and Jacob Alt and Bryce and Evan Owens; her grandparents Charles Alt, Ruchanee Holmer, Mike and Bella Trowbridge, and Marc and Theresa Nadeau; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is honored to remember the life and sacrifice of a brave hero of the Palmetto State, Specialist Ember Alt. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and remember the supreme sacrifice made by Specialist Ember M. Alt of the United States Army while she was serving a tour of military duty at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, and express to her family the profound appreciation of a grateful State and nation for her life, sacrifice, and service.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Specialist Ember M. Alt.
