VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE GOLDEN CORNER FOOD PANTRY IN SENECA FOR THREE DECADES OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE RESIDENTS OF OCONEE COUNTY.
Whereas, the Golden Corner Food Pantry was established in April 1985 as Golden Corner Ministries. Golden Corner Food Pantry is the largest food pantry in Oconee County, serving over 3,000 poor or disadvantaged individuals each month; and
Whereas, the food pantry was originally located in the basement of the old telephone company building in downtown Seneca. In their first year of operation, they served approximately one hundred households per month. During their thirty years of operation, that number has increased to 1600 households per month and 1.5 million pounds of food per year; and
Whereas, Golden Corner began the "Brown Bag" program in 2008 specifically to help seniors who were struggling. The program initially served forty-eight seniors and within an year, had increased to 359 seniors; and
Whereas, in 2010, due to Golden Corner's steady growth in clients, the board of directors voted to initiate a capital campaign to pay for a new building. Land was able to be purchased from early donations, and approximately $450,000 was raised towards the construction of a new building. In May 2011, the Golden Corner Food Pantry opened its doors on a mortgage-free building; and
Whereas, in 2013, the board began focusing on ways that they could improve the lives of their clients. Since initiating the "Make Life Better" program, the pantry has helped over 250 clients find jobs, get their GEDs, receive counseling and spiritual or medical help, and receive clothing; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate are grateful to the Golden Corner Food Pantry for dedicating their resources to serving those who are underprivileged, and look forward to hear of their continued success. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the Golden Corner Food Pantry in Seneca for three decades of dedicated service to the residents of Oconee County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Richard Kulper, Executive Director of Golden Corner Food Pantry.
