A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MAMIE JEWELL KIZER BOWZARD OF MONCKS CORNER ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Mamie Jewell Kizer Bowzard of Moncks Corner will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on February 19, 2016; and

Whereas, born on February 19, 1916, to Perry Dibble Kizer and Mary Elizabeth Reeves Kizer of Rosinville, she was the fourth of nine children. With her father, a farmer, notary, and surveyor, and her homemaker mother, young Jewell grew up much loved. As people of faith, she and her family would walk to Indianfield Methodist Church, just a mile from their farm. She remembers wearing her old shoes while walking to church and leaving them in the grass outside after donning her new shoes for church; and

Whereas, on the family farm, her love of cooking, canning, and all things sewing was fostered. She grew up picking cotton; harvesting potatoes, corn, and beans; and collecting huckleberries for her father to sell. The family felt they had plenty, and they were content; and

Whereas, Jewell graduated from high school in Harleyville and married Samuel Angus Bowzard, the ceremony taking place on April 15, 1933. After their marriage, they lived on his family's Holly Hill farm for a time. After his mother passed away, Jewell took over the care and keeping of her husband's younger siblings. When Jewell's mother passed away, they returned to her childhood farm, where Jewell helped with farm duties; and

Whereas, God blessed Jewell and her beloved husband with two daughters and a son, Betty Jean, Patricia Ann, and John Samuel, as well as fourteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, in 1939, the Bowzards made their permanent home in Moncks Corner. His work as a contractor took them to Kentucky, Illinois, North Carolina, New York, and Cambodia, whose people still hold a special place in Jewell's heart. Each Christmas, she sponsors farm animals for them through Heifer International. However, the Bowzards' love of fishing and his enjoyment of hunting always brought them back home; and

Whereas, throughout her life, Jewell's church life has been important to her, whether at Indianfield Methodist, Bethlehem Methodist, or First Baptist of Moncks Corner. Jewell served her churches throughout the years as a Sunday School teacher, nursery volunteer, and member and president of the Women's Missionary Union. She cooked meals for various church groups. In addition, she has been a faithful member of Bible studies and a strong prayer warrior for family and friends. Eastern Star also has been a central part of her life for decades; and

Whereas, still a prize cook and seamstress and one of the kindest folks around, Jewell makes her family and friends the lucky recipients of her culinary and sewing creativity. Her Christmas fruitcake cookies are famous, and many have received treasures from her hands such as quilts, clothing, and embroidery; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday, and the members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mamie Jewell Kizer Bowzard of Moncks Corner on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and much happiness in the days ahead.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mamie Jewell Kizer Bowzard.
