A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SHARON B. BROWN HARRIOTT, DIRECTOR FOR TRIO AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROGRAMS AT MIDLANDS TECHNICAL COLLEGE, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER FOR BEING ELECTED SOUTH ATLANTIC REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Sharon Harriott of Richland County was elected on April 5, 2014, in Jacksonville, Florida, to serve as the South Atlantic regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc., the eighteenth person to hold this office; and

Whereas, the daughter of the late Moses and Ruby Young Brown, she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in adult and community education, both from the University of South Carolina, and has done post-graduate study there; and

Whereas, a licensed professional counselor, Mrs. Harriott has served for the past thirty-one years in counseling and in administrative positions directing student services programs for high school students and adults returning to education and the workforce; and

Whereas, she is also a licensed funeral director and former owner of her family business, Gibson and Brown Funeral Home in Union. Her extensive community involvement includes membership in the 1994 class of Leadership Columbia and serving as the former president for the National Governing Board of the National Network for Women's Employment, former regional director of Region IV Women Work, and former president of SC Women Work; and

Whereas, she formerly served as the chairman of the South Carolina Department of Education Advisory Committee for Single Parent and Sex Equity Programs, a board member and vice chairman of the YWCA of the Midlands, a member of the NAACP, and a former parliamentarian of the South Carolina Professional Association for Access and Equity; and

Whereas, initiated in the Theta Gamma Chapter, Mrs. Harriott has been a legacy member of AKA for thirty-eight years and has been affiliated with the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter in Columbia for thirty-six years. She served Chapter Basileus as a graduate advisor, Epistoleus, two terms both as membership chairman and as parliamentarian, and she currently serves on the International Finance Committee and has served in a myriad of other capacities throughout all levels of the organization; and

Whereas, Mrs. Harriott has been honored for her extensive community service as Midlands Technical College's Employee of the Month, Five for the Future Award from the Leadership Columbia Alumni Association, Margaret Davis Bowen Outstanding Alumni Sorority member of South Atlantic Region of AKA, Johnnie Ruth Clark Award for Excellence in Community and Junior Colleges Support Services, and as 2006-2007 Woman of the Year of Chappelle Memorial African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church; and

Whereas, she is the widow of the late Mack M. Harriott and the granddaughter of the late Reverend H. D. and Alice Logan Brown and the late Reverend W. S. and Lou E. Young. Both of her grandfathers were longstanding ministers in the AME Church; and

Whereas, a faithful member of at Chappelle Memorial AME Church for twenty years, she serves as the treasurer of Stewardess Board #2, in the Women's Missionary Society, as a soloist in the Women's and Chancel choirs, and as a former steward; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives value the service of this daughter of the Palmetto State and wish her a successful tenure as the South Atlantic regional director of AKA. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Sharon B. Brown Harriott, Director for TRiO and Community Support Programs at Midlands Technical College, and the members congratulate her for being elected South Atlantic regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Sharon B. Brown Harriott.
