A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE TO ALL OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY'S SENIOR CITIZENS AND ORGANIZATIONS DEDICATED TO THEIR WELFARE UPON THE FIFTY-SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROCLAMATION OF "SENIOR CITIZENS MONTH" IN 1963.

Whereas, the month of May was designated as "Senior Citizens Month" by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. May 2015 will mark the fifty-second anniversary of this proclamation. The South Carolina Senate is honored to recognize Spartanburg's senior citizens, who are a valuable asset to their community, and all organizations in Spartanburg that provide unwavering support and assistance to senior citizens; and

Whereas, organizations like AARP help seniors turn their goals and dreams into real possibilities, strengthen communities and fight for the issues that matter most to families, such as healthcare, employment and income security, retirement planning, affordable utilities and protection from financial abuse; and

Whereas, the Silver Haired Legislature identifies issues, concerns and possible solutions for problems facing the aging population in South Carolina, makes recommendations on aging to the Governor, the General Assembly, and various departments and agencies, participates in educational forums to explore issues related to senior citizens, promotes good government for all South Carolinians, carries out all purposes and activities on a nonpartisan basis, and conducts general assembly sessions annually in the State Capitol; and

Whereas, Mobile Meals of Spartanburg dedicates their time to delivering nutritious, hot meals to Spartanburg's frail and homebound residents, providing nourishment for the mind, body and soul, delivering love, compassion, and hope to those in need; and

Whereas, Senior Centers of Spartanburg fosters independence while allowing seniors to age in place, and is responsible for providing advocacy, access, and shared funding for seniors within the eight hundred eleven square mile boundary of Spartanburg County. They integrate with other organizations to consider the value of research and probable replication of current "best practices" in the field of aging; and

Whereas, Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, and many other local organizations are unwavering in their service and dedication to Spartanburg's senior citizens, providing enriching educational opportunities, programs, and services that enhance the lives of Spartanburg's senior population; and

Whereas, Spartanburg's senior citizens are respected and valued members of their community and the members of the Senate would like to recognize them and organizations who support them for their contribution to the community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound gratitude and appreciation to all of Spartanburg County's senior citizens and organizations dedicated to their welfare upon the fifty-second anniversary of the proclamation of "Senior Citizens Month" in 1963.
