A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. FRANKIE NEWMAN FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE WIL LOU GRAY OPPORTUNITY SCHOOL.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to learn that Mrs. Mary Frances "Frankie" Newman will be honored for her many years of dedicated service to the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School Board of Trustees on May 11, 2016; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman was first elected to serve the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School in 1996 and has served continuously since; and

Whereas, born in Heath Springs, South Carolina to a farmer and a teacher, Mrs. Newman graduated from Health Springs High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Columbia College and later a master's degree in education and school administration from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman began her teaching career at Brookland-Cayce High School teaching American history and English. She also coached girls basketball through which she met her husband, who was coaching boys basketball and teaching science; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman married Tom Newman on June 16, 1950 and they were blessed with three sons: Heath, Scott, and Tee, all of whom followed the paths of their parents and are educators; and

Whereas, in addition to teaching and coaching at Brookland-Cayce High School, Mrs. Newman taught at Congaree Elementary and BC Grammar #2 and later served as the Director of Guidance and Counseling at Fulmer Middle School, after which she began in school administration as a budding administrator at Pine Ridge Middle School. She was eventually asked by the school district to serve as assistant to the superintendent and she served four superintendents in that position; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman has served her community through organizations such as the West Columbia-Cayce Chamber of Commerce, the Cayce Woman's Club, the Cayce-West Columbia Optimist Club, the Cayce Museum, the Columbia Historic Foundation Museum Homes, and many others; and

Whereas, in recognition of her outstanding career in education, Mrs. Newman was named the West Columbia-Cayce Young Woman of the Year by the Jaycees, the Citizen of the Year by the West Columbia-Cayce Chamber of Commerce, was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award for the State of South Carolina by the Conservation Services, and was inducted into the Brookland-Cayce Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman is a member of Cayce United Methodist Church where she serves as a Sunday school teacher, volunteers in the missions department, and is a member of the worship committee. She was the 2008 Woman of the Year and has served as president of United Methodist Women; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina for her outstanding contributions to the field of education and wish her much success and happiness in all her future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Frankie Newman for her many years of dedicated service to the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Frankie Newman.
