A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF RUTH CORLEY SIMONS, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Ruth Corley Simons; and

Whereas, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Silas Pulaski and Eva Harrison Corley, Ruth was born on July 30, 1925 in Irmo, South Carolina. She was the seventh of ten children. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and later took classes in Early Childhood Development at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, she was married to the love of her life, the late Freddie Simons, and was blessed with three children, Doris Jean (Jeanie), Freddie (Sonny), and Beverly (Bev); and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons was a dedicated and loyal member of Reid Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she faithfully served for over sixty-five years. She was a senior steward emeritus, adult Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, president of the Missionary Society, and member of the senior choir. The Ruth Simons Family Life Center was named in her honor; and

Whereas, Ruth's passion was caring for children. She worked as a practical nurse at Columbia Hospital's pediatric unit and later as teacher and director for V. V. Reid Kindergarten and Nursery School. She served as director for over forty years and was instrumental in the opening of V. V. Reid Elementary School; and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons has received numerous awards for her outstanding and dedicated work and service to her church, V. V. Reid School, and the Greenview community. She has been presented the key to the City of Columbia, and the day was declared Ruth Corley Simons Day; and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons lived a rich, full life, surrounded by her loving family. She enjoyed reading her bible, having family get-togethers, and helping the elderly and less fortunate. She also loved to travel to new and exciting places; and

Whereas, Ruth is preceded in death by her sisters, Mattie Johnson, Helen Mills, and Gertrude Kent; and brothers, Leroy Corley, Waddell Corley, Heyward Corley, and Willie Corley; and

Whereas, Ruth leaves to cherish her memory three devoted children, Doris Jean (Herbert) Rembert, Freddie Simons, and Beverly (Henry) Cleare; six grandchildren, Gia (Eric) Johnson, Melanie (Barron) Williams, Kelli (Jarrod) Sumter, Ryan (Robyn) Cleare, Saidah Simons, and Issac Simons; seven great-granddaughters, Mallory, Destiny, Joy, Noel, Ravyn, Rylee, and Kendall; godson, Jeffrey Corley; brothers, Charles (Sarah) Corley and Horrace (Teresa) Corley; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae Corley, Bertha Simons, and Gertrude Dickerson; brothers-in-law, Waddell (Geneva) Simons and Abdul Saloon; many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins; and the caring and compassionate staff at Brookdale Senior Living Solutions, Tidewater Hospice, Fresenius Meadowlake Dialysis, Senior Health Associates and Vital Care Medical Transport Services, and all the dedicated and special people who helped care for her over the years. She will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Ruth Corley Simons and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Doris Jean Rembert, Freddie Simons, and Beverly Cleare.
