A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO SALUTE JOSEPH EDWARD "ED" GARRISON, CAREERS/EDUCATION ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR FOR THE APPLIED TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION CAMPUS AND KERSHAW COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, TO EXTEND DEEP APPRECIATION FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, for twenty-two years, the Kershaw County School District has enjoyed the benefit of the dedication, experience, and leadership of Joseph Edward "Ed" Garrison, who will soon retire from his position as careers/education economic development coordinator for the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) and the Kershaw County School District, as well as from his position as district coordinator for Junior Leadership Kershaw County; and

Whereas, in preparation for his life's work, Ed Garrison earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. He began his career as a staff writer and photographer with the Camden Independent and moved up the ladder to assistant to the managing editor and senior staff writer before accepting a post as project manager with Camden Central Business Development Corporation. There, he directed the implementation of the nationally recognized Main Street revitalization program for downtown Camden. He next served as a public information specialist for the South Carolina State Museum and later worked as a public information and marketing consultant for the Office of the Governor; and

Whereas, in 1996, he took up his duties as careers/education economic development coordinator for ATEC and the Kershaw County School District, at the same time continuing to serve as district coordinator for the award-winning Junior Leadership Kershaw County program, which he organized in 1988. In suitable preparation for this task, in 1987 he graduated from the Chamber of Commerce's initial Leadership Kershaw County program; and

Whereas, as careers/education economic development coordinator, Ed has served in the area of work-based learning opportunities, including shadowing and internships. He has worked with students, teachers, and the community to coordinate activities and awareness regarding careers and workforce employability needs. As district coordinator for Junior Leadership Kershaw County, a student leadership development partnership of the Kershaw County School District, the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, and Camden Military Academy, Ed has seen more than nine hundred students complete the program, which is one of the oldest continuously operating high school leadership programs in South Carolina; and

Whereas, over the years, Ed Garrison has received numerous honors, ranging from early awards in journalism to the William F. Nettles Award for outstanding volunteer service to the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce. Believing strongly in active community service, he is a member of the United Methodist Church, Kershaw County Local Emergency Planning Committee, and Friends of the Camden Archives and Museum Board of Directors, among other organizations; and

Whereas, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and excellence Ed Garrison has bestowed on the people of South Carolina, most particularly those of Camden, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in wishing him well as he enters retirement and trusts he will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, salute Joseph Edward "Ed" Garrison, careers/education economic development coordinator for the Applied Technology Education Campus and Kershaw County School District, on the occasion of his retirement, extend deep appreciation for his many years of distinguished service, and wish him much success and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ed Garrison.
