A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE GAFFNEY HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2018 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS AAAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Gaffney High golf team of Cherokee County took top honors at the state tournament held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence on May 14-15, 2018; and

Whereas, to the sheer delight of their exuberant fans, the Gaffney Indians defeated the four-time defending state champion Boiling Springs High School by an incredible 28 strokes, garnering Gaffney's first state golf championship since 2003; and

Whereas, in the last four appearances at the state finals, the Indians had fallen to the Boiling Springs' challengers, coming in third place in 2015 and second place for two consecutive years; and

Whereas, Gaffney's Zack Gordon, who has committed to play for Clemson, posted an incredible score of 66 on Monday, the first day of play, for six below par and bested his own scorecard on Tuesday with a course record of 62, tallying 128 to earn his medal and to demolish the 36-hole record, not narrowly, but by eight shots; and

Whereas, Gaffney teammate Seth Taylor was his nearest competitor, and he also finished Monday's play with an impressive score of 66, and posted a still lower 64 the following day, breaking the previous 36-hole score by six strokes and finishing in second place for the tournament; and

Whereas, all of the Gaffney golfers shot among the top thirty players in the tournament: the Indians' Cody Transou shot four strokes over par with scores of 76 and 72 for a 148 total; teammate Brock Hamrick posted five over with daily tallies of 72 and 77 for a 149 total; and Ryker Ward shot 81 and 71 for a 152 total; and

Whereas, in a sport that requires precision, power, and strategy, Head Coach Brandon Coggins and Assistant Coach Zach Bridges maximized their own athletic ability and training to hone a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the greens; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Gaffney golfers have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Gaffney High School golf team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2018 South Carolina Class AAAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. RaaShad Fitzpatrick, the Principal of Gaffney High School, and Coach Brandon Coggins.
