A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE HEBRON ZION PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) OF JOHNS ISLAND ON THE OCCASION OF THE TWENTY-EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS MERGER AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR A CENTURY AND A HALF OF SERVICE TO GOD AND THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, on January 7, 1990, the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA) constituted the Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church and designated it a redevelopment project. The church was organized with one hundred eighty-five members. The Synod of the South Atlantic and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) joined the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery and the Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church in partnership for the acquisition of facilities for the new church, which was formed from the merger of Hebron Presbyterian and Zion Presbyterian churches; and

Whereas, these two churches already had long histories. Hebron Presbyterian Church was organized in 1865 on a site five hundred feet from Gregg Plantation on Johns Island. Zion Presbyterian Church was organized in April 1870 as a daughter church of Hebron Presbyterian in an effort to better meet the needs of the growing congregation living south of Bohicket Road. The members of both churches originally worshipped in a bush tent; and

Whereas, on March 1, 1993, Congun Industries began construction of the Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church facilities. Dedication services were held on Sunday, November 14, 1993, at 2915 Bohicket Road on Johns Island, with the theme "Builder, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," under the leadership of Reverend Alonza A. Washington; and

Whereas, the church is still committed to the worship and work of God and takes pride in the mission God has called it to accomplish. Hebron Zion has reached out to the community with the John and Mattie Washington Preschool, Hebron St. Francis Senior Citizens Center, and Community Emergency Food Pantry ministries. The church has established a loving and working relationship with their sisters and brothers at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, North Carolina. Both churches have continued to visit each other over the years; and

Whereas, in March 2017, Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church was greatly blessed when Elder James Parlor, one of its own members, was commissioned to serve as parish associate. He follows in a line of godly Hebron Zion ministers who have sought to spread the word of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in ministering to the members of the congregation and the community; and

Whereas, to commemorate the twenty-eighth anniversary of its merger and hold its mortgage-burning ceremony, the church has set apart a special celebratory time, Sunday, July 29, 2018; and

Whereas, Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church has been a beacon of light and a community worship center in the Johns Island area for one hundred fifty years, and, God willing, will continue its godly heritage for many more years of worship and service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church (USA) of Johns Island on the occasion of the twenty-eighth anniversary of its merger and commend the church for a century and a half of service to God and the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church.
