INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 4436) to recognize the positive impact of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education on the quality of life in South Carolina, and to declare March 7, 2018, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) EDUCATION ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO DECLARE MARCH 7, 2018, AS "STEM EDUCATION DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are recognized as world-class knowledge to be mastered by all graduates of South Carolina schools; and

Whereas, opportunities in STEM career fields such as advanced manufacturing, computing, and engineering continue to grow in South Carolina; and

Whereas, STEM learning in schools and afterschool, and in a wide variety of formal and informal learning settings, all contribute to increased STEM knowledge and skills; and

Whereas, partnerships between education and industry are key to promoting, supporting, and improving STEM education in South Carolina; and

Whereas, STEM learning is enhanced by dedicated and well-prepared teachers, mentors, and volunteers; and

Whereas, the Palmetto State is committed to providing its next generation of leaders with a rigorous, well-rounded education; and

Whereas, it is important to recognize and promote success in both student and teacher accomplishments in the STEM area; and

Whereas, all South Carolinians should pause to celebrate mathematics on March fourteenth, commonly known as "Pi Day"; and

Whereas, this year, South Carolina's statewide network for STEM Education, now known as S2TEM Centers SC, is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize the positive impact of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education on the quality of life of the residents of South Carolina, and declare March 7, 2018, as "STEM Education Day" in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to S2TEM Centers SC.
