A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR DEACON HARRY ANDERSON NASH OF MAULDIN, TO RECOGNIZE HIM FOR BEING THE OLDEST DEACON CURRENTLY SERVING AT FLAT ROCK BAPTIST CHURCH, AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS DEDICATED AND FAITHFUL SERVICE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Deacon Harry Anderson Nash as the oldest deacon currently serving at Flat Rock Baptist Church at the venerable age of ninety-six; and

Whereas, Deacon Nash was born on December 13, 1923 in York County, South Carolina, and he grew up in Pineville, North Carolina; and

Whereas, a veteran of the United States Navy, Deacon Nash served for four years during World War II. During his service, he was stationed in a number of locations, including Norfolk, Virginia for basic training; Whidbey Island in Washington; and the Aleutian Islands. In the North Pacific, he served on the Patrol Craft Escort 896 Ship as a Commissary Steward; and

Whereas, Deacon Nash worked as a chef for twenty-six years at the Sigma Chi Fraternity at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. In 2016, he was recognized by Sigma Chi Fraternity as an honorary member; and

Whereas, upon relocating back to Mauldin, Deacon Nash worked for US Shelter as a landscape technician, until he retired in his eighties; and

Whereas, an active leader in his community, Deacon Nash served as commander of the Ithaca Chapter 147 of the Disabled American Veterans for several years; and

Whereas, Deacon Nash and his family were formerly members of the Spencer Federated Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons for several years; and

Whereas, today, Deacon Nash and his wife are dedicated members of the Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Piedmont, where they have served as a deacon and deaconess for over thirty years. With the church, Deacon Nash has also been instrumental in organizing the prison ministry and has mentored many prisoners over the years; and

Whereas, Deacon Nash has been married to Ella Mae Cook Nash for seventy-two years. Together, they raised five sons and three daughters, and they now have seventeen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate greatly appreciate the dedication and commitment of this son of South Carolina to Flat Rock Baptist Church, the State of South Carolina, and this great nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor Deacon Harry Anderson Nash of Mauldin, recognize him for being the oldest deacon currently serving at Flat Rock Baptist Church, and commend him for his dedicated and faithful service.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Deacon Harry Anderson Nash.
