A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE SHERIFF ANTHONY DENNIS OF SUMTER COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SHERIFFS' ASSOCIATION AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO SUMTER COUNTY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to recognize Sheriff Anthony Dennis for his exceptional leadership; and

Whereas, Sheriff Dennis is the son of Lottie Dennis and the late Jimmy Dennis, Jr. of Rembert. He is an alumnus of Central Carolina Technical College, where he earned an associate's degree in criminology; Saint Leo College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in criminology; and Troy University, where he earned a Master of Science in criminal justice. He is also a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, the FBI National Academy, the 90th National Sheriffs' Institute Executive Level Management School, and Leadership Sumter; and

Whereas, a thirty-eight-year veteran of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Dennis has had a significant impact on Sumter County since beginning his career in 1982. He has served as sergeant, shift lieutenant of the Patrol Division, commander of the Narcotics Division, major of operations, and chief deputy; and

Whereas, Sheriff Dennis was first elected as Sumter County's first African-American sheriff in 2004, and today, he is one of the longest-serving sheriffs in Sumter County history; and

Whereas, Sheriff Dennis also serves as an adjunct professor at Morris College and Central Carolina Technical College and is a certified instructor through the state Criminal Justice Academy; and

Whereas, a leader in his profession and community, Sheriff Dennis is involved with the FBI National Academy, National Sheriff's Association, SC Law Enforcement Association, Palmetto Law Enforcement Association, SC Association of Countywide Elected Executives, Charlie Kubala Memorial Scholarship Fund, Sumter County Sheriff's Office Boys and Girls Youth Inc., Sumter County Homeland Security Committee, Criminal Justice Program Advisory Board, Sumter School District Community Advisory Council, Catchall Masonic Lodge #425, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and

Whereas, over the years, he has received many honors, including Central Carolina Technical College Alumni of the Year, NAACP Marvin Scarborough Community Service Award, Freddie Solomon Foundation Award, a citation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary 10813, and Manning Avenue Heritage Award. He also served as an honorary squadron commander at Shaw Air Force Base and was featured in IMARA Woman and Diversity Works; and

Whereas, a devout Christian, Sheriff Dennis is an active member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where he serves as a trustee; and

Whereas, Sheriff Dennis is married to his wife Lorraine, and together, they have one son, Grayson; and

Whereas, the Senate appreciates the dedication that Sheriff Dennis has shown in serving the people of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize Sheriff Anthony Dennis of Sumter County for his outstanding service as president of the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association and commend him for his many years of dedicated service to Sumter County and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
