TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. GLORIA LADSON-BILLINGS, KELLNER FAMILY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF URBAN EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN (MADISON), AND TO WELCOME HER TO THE PALMETTO STATE AS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SECOND ANNUAL EQUITY IN EDUCATION CONFERENCE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings will be the keynote speaker at the University of South Carolina Second Annual Equity in Education Conference on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, her topic being Keeping the Dream: Culturally Sustaining Teaching and Learning; and
Whereas, Dr. Ladson-Billings is the Kellner Family Distinguished Professor of Urban Education in the University of Wisconsin (Madison) Department of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as a faculty affiliate in the University of Wisconsin (Madison) Department of Educational Policy Studies; and
Whereas, Dr. Ladson-Billings' research examines the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African-American students. She also investigates critical race theory as applied to education. She is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters and of the critically acclaimed books The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African-American Children and Crossing Over to Canaan: The Journey of New Teachers in Diverse Classrooms. Further, she is the former editor of the American Educational Research Journal, former president of the American Educational Research Association, and a member of several editorial boards; and
Whereas, her work has won numerous scholarly awards, including the H.I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship, the NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the Palmer O. Johnson Outstanding Research Award. During the 2003-2004 academic year, she was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. In 2004, she received the George and Louise Spindler Award from the Council on Anthropology and Education for significant and ongoing contributions to the field of educational anthropology; and
Whereas, Dr. Ladson-Billings holds honorary degrees from Umeň University (Umeň, Sweden), the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and the University of Alicante (Alicante, Spain); and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the significant contributions of Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings to her field, and the members welcome her to this great State as she addresses the University of South Carolina Second Annual Equity in Education Conference. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Kellner Family Distinguished Professor of Urban Education at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and welcome her to the Palmetto State as the keynote speaker at the University of South Carolina Second Annual Equity in Education Conference.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings.
